The historic Village of Aldie was started in 1765 with the construction of the Aldie Mill by James and George Mercer. In 1809, with the completion of the Little River Turnpike, James Mercer’s son, Charles Mercer, partnered with William Cooke and developed the village on 30 acres of land. Mercer named the village Aldie after his Scottish ancestral home.

As infrastructure continued to develop, the village grew, establishing its own post office in 1811, and by the census of 1820, it boasted 248 residents. During the Gettysburg Campaign, the village and the lands around it were the stage for the Battle of Aldie and was the home of Confederate John Singleton Mosby.

Aldie is host to several historical buildings such as the Mill, the Old Aldie Rectory, the Toll House, the Post Office, and more. There are historical markers commemorating the battles and skirmishes fought in and around the village. With the large-scale development in Loudoun County, we can now see the full boundaries of the town of Aldie with the gem that is the village right in the middle.
