Fairfax, Virginia

Founded in 1805, the original name for the area was the Town of Providence. It was officially renamed the Town of Fairfax in 1874 after Lord Thomas Fairfax who was awarded the land by King Charles. Now there are two entities, the City of Fairfax (formed in 1961) and Fairfax County. While the city remains the county seat, the county has grown out around it.  This area is still growing and developing and in 2009 Fairfax was ranked No. 3 in Forbes Magazine’s “Top 25 Places to Live Well”.  Fairfax is also known nationally for its strong public school system. The area includes rural, suburban and urban areas rich with history, arts and culture, community events, and tons to do. This commuter’s paradise is situated on all of the major routes including Route 95, Route 66, the 495 Beltway, Fairfax County Parkway and more giving residents easy access to Washington, DC and surrounding areas.  There are multiple options for public transportation available and they are linked to the Washington Metro Rail system, Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express, as well as access to Dulles International Airport.

In 1757, Loudoun County was created and reduced the size of Fairfax County by 60 percent. Home to George Washington and George Mason, Fairfax County continued to grow and prosper though it saw population declines during the wars. As late as 1870, the county was still mainly a rural, farm oriented community. From 1930 forward the county grew exponentially as farmland gave way to housing developments and population increased. The Federal Government employed many of the residents and the influx of Technology related businesses has only helped the area grow and prosper further. From war to peace and depression to expansion, Fairfax has been through it all while keeping its rich history intact.
